The impact of maths in everyday life

Introducing your child to the basic laws of mathematics at the earliest possible stages of their lives is a fundamental step in developing practical skills that will be critical throughout their life. At this development stage it is very important to teach mathematics for the children to not only master the “language of the universe” but also improve cognitive and critical thinking skills, social and emotional development, physical abilities and our understanding of all other STEAM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics).

Impact of Math Concepts
The progress made by all A⁺Students is tangible as the lessons learnt are applied to everyday life. What parents need to stop focusing on - at the developmental stage - is the test results. This way of assessing and determining a child’s success is never fun and can negatively impact confidence. Creating a fun and conducive environment where mistakes can be made is essential in making any child understand where they went wrong. It’s our focus on teaching the method and applying the mathematical theory through touch and play where we see the most growth and smiles.

Cognitive & Critical Thinking
The key math concepts are essential in developing a child’s cognitive and critical thinking skills. Logic can be measured across numerous concepts like problem solving, estimation, number sense and patterns. These are essential and transferable beyond numbers and into real everyday events. There are activities used at A⁺Students that involve shapes, colours, objects and physical interaction to make the cognitive and critical thinking lessons fun, engaging and everlasting.

Social & Emotional Development
Learning mathematics the A⁺Students way is always a social event, as it involves our students and teachers to all be involved in solving the sum. It’s these interactive lessons that build a social environment, where children can discuss their processes and answers. This is a pivotal step in developing a child’s conversational skills to validate their opinion. This basic foundation will be hugely beneficial to a child’s ability to reason and have the necessary confidence to speak in front of a group.

The group sessions allow for honest and authentic interaction between the teacher and student. The teacher offers direction, as well as gives recognition and credit to the children when they use the correct method to answer a sum. This is extremely important in developing confidence at a young age. It’s this supportive environment that creates a space where no answer is wrong and every attempt is applauded and given attention by both peers and teachers.

Physical Motor Skills
At A⁺Students our technique is to use the ancient Japanese learning tool known as the Soroban. The word ‘soroban’ simply means ‘abacus’ and its our integration of this ancient math toy that assists the children in physically solving sums. As the children physically interact with the different items they begin to build muscle memory and improve motor skills. When a child can tangibly see the change in addition or subtraction, it reinforces a deeper understanding of the lesson and theory being applied. This physical interaction goes beyond maths and benefits the child in all coordination skills later in life.

Mathematics is more than just numbers, it is a foundation for creative problem solving that is used by all of the world’s leading Scientists, Tech Developers in Silicon Valley, 3D Artists and Engineers. Excelling at mathematics goes beyond the test and very much into the real world application of its lessons solving everyday problems. A⁺Students lays these foundations for a solid future for all children to build a successful life in a fun and engaging way.

Franchising worldwide continues having a 90% success rate as opposed to 10% for those starting a business on their own and whilst the sector in South Africa contributes around R721 billion to the country’s GDP, there are still many businesses masquerading as franchises when in fact their business models are far from that of a franchise.
